Manta birostris (Donndorff, 1798) is also known as the devil ray, Atlantic manta and Pacific manta. These are the largest of the rays and are closely related to sharks. Harmless, majestic creatures, they have short tails and no stinging spine. Recent research indicates that there may be more than one species of manta.

This dive site was named in honor of legendary divemaster Larry Smith, who discovered it shortly before his death. On one of our dives there we were visited by the most beautiful manta ray – white below and with a lovely chevron across the wings. While we sat waiting on a ledge, hooked in to stay still in the current, this magnificent creature came down and eye-balled Shaun, swam a little way off and then repeated the action as if asking to be photographed.
