DIVING SHARM EL SHEIK

What was once an isolated bay used solely by local fishermen became the Red Sea's first destination for divers. As time has gone by, it has grown and developed at a rate of knots. Apart from divers, it's also a magnet for sun-lovers.

All the same, it's still one of the best kicking off points for divers. Sharm can be divided into three main regions. There's the bay of Sharm el Maya where the port and fishing fleet is located. Then there's the larger, more populated Na'ama Bay. Most of the hotels and tourists are here, and if you like it quiet, it's not for you. Finally there's Sharm el Moya which retains it's Egyptian flavour with bazaars, supermarkets and restaurants.

No matter where you stay access to diving is simplicity itself. And plenty of choices of well known sites. There's Ras Muhammad, one of the world’s most famous. A national park was established in 1983 to protect coral reefs and the fragile environment. A little further on, the Straights of Gubal reveal a mass of wrecks including the famous Thislegorm. We first dived this a few months after it was discovered, but now it's awash with divers.

Meanwhile opposite Sharm are the Straights of Tiran, Gordon, Woodhouse and many, many other well known and much loved reefs.
