DIVING JORDAN

Head out of Aqaba, around the tiny stretch of Jordan's Red Sea coast to find, well, what looks like not much at all. Until that is, you drop below the surface and discover pretty coral gardens and plentiful marine life.

Although eclipsed by her Egyptian neighbours, Jordan's 27 kilometres of coastline supply surprisingly good diving. Splendid coral gardens are in a very good state, probably because there are considerably fewer divers here than in nearby Eilat or most Egyptian resorts.

There's a good mix of hard and soft corals supporting all the usual Red Sea creatures. Seeing huge beds of cabbage coral is a particularly strong memory, as is the ease of diving here. You just wander in off the shore and within a few gentle fin strokes you're immersed in a delightful reef.

There's a decent wreck - the Cedar Pride - and a couple of good sites way up near the Saudi border where it's tempting to head down to depth to view massive elephant's ear corals.

TRAVELOGUE:

Flights: Royal Jordanian
Dive Centres: Royal Diving Centre
Accomodation: Alcazar Hotel

PROS AND CONS:

It's a while since we went to Jordan. We did some of our most "formative" diving there and loved it so much we went back a year later. Looking back we have nothing but good memories. The dive style is similar to Egypt but without the crowds, the food and hotels were good and we would go back. It's a shame about the current political situation that as made it less popular than it deserves to be.
