August became a spectacular diving month when we returned to the Maldives, location of our first ever open-water dives. We have seen a lot of changes in this tiny country yet the marine realm continues to fascinate us... so much so that there are now four new Maldives report pages online.
NEW diving destination reports:
the manta rays and whalesharks of Hanifaru Lagoon

Our first destination in the Maldives was the incredible Hanifaru Lagoon. Words cannot describe what it was like to be submerged with so many manta rays at once. Saying there were 50 at a time is not an exaggeration... and there were the whalesharks that came with them. The dive report and photo gallery has full details plus there's a video to watch all the action.
Baa and North Malé Atolls
On route to Hanifaru, we sailed through and dived North Malé and Baa Atolls. There were more mantas in both areas, along with reef sharks, turtles and a couple of wrecks. There's another full report with images and a video on this area too.
All things considered this was a completely unforgettable trip!

barracuda FEATURED destination: Sipadan, Borneo
Another big stuff destination, diving around Borneo's Sipadan Island in may now be a little restricted but, despite the rumours flying about the internet, you can still do it. You simply have to stay on a neighbouring island. Read about it here.

Continuing the pelagic theme, you might like to visit the updated photography gallery on sharks. These fascinating, intelligent animals are under constant threat, their oceanic well-being less than guaranteed. Consider signing up to some conservation sites and adding your support to saving them for the future.
