Mangrove corals | West Papua
LOCATION: Indonesia DIVE SITE: Nampele Island shallows DEPTH: 26 metres

Coastal mangrove forests are a vital breeding ground and nursery for many for marine species. However, in Western Papua they are also a haven for developing young corals.

The bluewater mangroves that rim Nampele Island have something of a curious reputation. Apart from soft corals and fans, which have attached themselves to the mangrove roots, the area is also home to saltwater crocodiles. A few months back, one diver was attacked there but most divers – including ourselves – enjoy an uneventful, shallow dive in the warm water.
